Who has the record for this game?

It's a bit hard to say. All versions of the game (US SNES, (J) SNES, and PS2/GC) are quite different in terms of timing. I have a 42:58 on SNES, which is ancient and definitely improvable. Nijikutsu has a 43:21 on the Japanese version. Obdajr, who plays on PS2, has a 39:47. If and when I get a 'good' run, it will be the world record. Read on about version differences.

Why don't you play the PS2 version if it's faster?

Two big reasons: one, the PS2 (and I assume Gamecube) ports have input lag. It's noticeable, but probably only 2-3 frames. In a game that requires a lot of precise movement, it's unplayable once you're used to the correct timing. Two: I'd much rather do a run on the 'definitive' version of the game. I love retro game consoles, The AC version also has obnoxious sound effects.

What are the version differences in this game?

Japanese vs US: The Japanese version has randomized cutscenes (so, a 1 in 3 shot at getting the fastest one), which is awful for an RTA. It has slightly faster text, but it's not too significant. <br /><br /> AC vs SNES: The places where the game lags are different: SNES chokes on too many sprites; AC chokes on certain visual effects and loading zones/screen transitions. AC also has faster text!

Why don't you run 100%?

100% is a bad category. You basically have to collect several items that have no direct benefit in the run (other than making two fights slightly easier and boring). It also requires a slower, less fun route, and one less quickkill. In short, nothing stands out as far as gameplay or execution that makes it worth playing. The game is already long enough...

What's the deal with the save states?

There's this neat device called the "Nakitek Game Saver", which allows you to make a save state on console. It's quite useful to practice stuff, and it's very cheap. It basically copies the game's RAM back and forth through the Game Saver. Unlike an emulator, there's no input lag. This doesn't work with games that have enhancement chips like Mega Man X2, X3, Yoshi's Island, Mario RPG, etc.

Why do you fight Shade Man first/what's the quick kill?

Shade Man's weapon, Noise Crush, can be shot through a boss door to kill both Spring and Turbo Man before their fights begin. Each saves quite a bit of time, making it worth your while to use Mega Buster on Shade. This trick is frame perfect.
